I recently received my Kicstarter-backed Elegoo Orangestorm Giga! I was part of KS1 so if you’re in the same batch of people in KS1, you should likely be seeing yours soon. Anway, I’ve been playing with it a lot and I have to say – its really freakin cool. I don’t think I would say its a printer that everyone should get because it’s absolutely massive. I couldn’t fit it in my 3d printer room without worrying about being able to shoot content in there. There are a lot more things that I dislike about this printer than I Like about this printer. But first, lets talk about what I do like:
1. It’s absolutely massive! The fact that I can print large format shapes and models unlocks a whole new world of creativity for me. I have a few projects I want to pick up now that I have this massive printer. It’s advertised as being 800x800x1000mm but the reality is that you can get 815x810x1015mm based on what klipper is showing me.
2. I think it prints really well when the models are sliced in Orca. Oh, you thought there wasn’t an Orca print profile for this? Think again.
3. It runs klipper and klipper is your friend. Ever wish you could really discover the full potential of your 3d printer? well klipper allows you to do that. you can configure almost every aspect how your printer operates through Klipper. IN fact, I am modifying my Elegoo’s printer.cfg file to make it work the way it was intended.
Here’s what I don’t like:
1. This thing is seriously loud. It’s like having a vacuum running in the house for several days. The wife was not happy about it.
2. Its really really really big. Unless you have a dedicated hobby room or garage, you are not going to be able to fit this thing comfortably.
3. Firmware is still not there. Unless you are using my Klipper settings and orca profile (or someone else’ profile) you have you use Elegoo’s version of Cura… 4.8. I thought i would never have to use Cura ever again. It’s just not a good slicer – anymore. Now I don’t need to. I’ve got a decent printer profile made and configured my Klipper printer.cfg to handle the unique g-code Cura (is supposed to use, but it doesn’t) to control the heat beds, nozzles, etc.
4. Still trying to get the prints to come out without this weird z-banding that’s happening. I’m still testing my Orca profile for this for the 2nd half of my helix rocket I’m working on. I suspect that my issue is related to Cura and not so much the printer itself. I’ll let you know.
I’ll do a full video review on this once i have more time with this machine. Til then, follow me to stay up to date with what i’m doing!
